How to Install a Toyota Camry Tail Light

How to Install a Toyota Camry Tail Light

Like adding oil or changing a tire, swapping out used tail lights is easy for any car owner to do. This is especially true for models like the Toyota Camry, a practical car. In keeping with the practical nature of this car, changing your own tail light can save you the expense and hassle of going to a mechanic. Replacement bulbs are available anywhere auto parts are sold, and the job shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. Noe that these instructions are for the 2007 model but should work for most Camrys of the era without adjustment. You can replace the tail light on older models just as easily, but it may require slight changes in the procedure.

Easy

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the engine to the Camry and pop the trunk. Never attempt any kind of repair--even a simple task like this one--while the car is running.

    • 2

Look for the access panel on the side of the trunk that leads to the tail light. You should be able to snap it open with your hands. If it proves stubborn, carefully pry it open with a screwdriver. Note the presence of two separate tail light holders in the space beyond: the top one for the turn signal light and the bottom one for the stop/tail and rear side marker lights. Determine which light needs replacing before you proceed.

    • 3

Turn the light holder containing the burnt-out tail light toward the back of the car (clockwise for the right-hand side, and counterclockwise for the left-hand side) and pull outward. It should come free of the surrounding frame.

    • 4

Press down on the holder's lock release to detach the old bulb. Then fit the new bulb in its place. Make sure the lock has snapped shut and the new bulb is secure in its housing before continuing.

    • 5

Slide the holder back into position and turn it in the reverse direction in which you attached it (counterclockwise for the right-hand side and clockwise for the left-hand side) to snap it in place. It should remain there without further adjustments.

    • 6

Snap the plastic covering shut and close the trunk, then have someone stand nearby with a view of the back of the car. Climb into the driver's seat and turn on the engine, then depress the brakes or activate the turn signal. Ask the other person if he can see it clearly to ensure the new light is functioning as it should.
