How do I Replace a 2006 Toyota Tacoma Stop Light?

How do I Replace a 2006 Toyota Tacoma Stop Light?

The 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck uses a 3-stop-light system. The two lower stop lights are part of the tail light assembly, which uses combination bulbs. The upper-center stop light is mounted on the rear of the cab, and uses three stop light bulbs. Owners can easily change any of these bulbs with only a screwdriver and a socket set. Replacement bulbs are available at any automotive parts store.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement bulbs
  1. Lower Stop Lights

    • 1

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. This step is not absolutely essential, but will prevent potential shocks. Power is still connected to the stop lights even with the vehicle ignition off.

    • 2

      Open the truck's tailgate.

    • 3

Remove the two bolts that connect the taillight assembly to the truck. Remove the assembly from the truck, being careful not to put excessive strain on the wires.

    • 4

Remove the combination bulb holder by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it out of the taillight assembly.

    • 5

Pull the bulb out of the bulb holder and replace it with the new bulb. Insert the bulb holder into the taillight assembly and turn it clockwise to lock it into place.

    • 6

Return the taillight assembly to its place and replace the two bolts. Do not over-tighten the bolts, as it could crack the taillight assembly. Close the tailgate. Reconnect the negative battery cable if you're not moving on to Step 2.

    Upper Cab Stop Light

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable if you haven't already done so.

    • 2

Remove the two screws that hold the center stop light assembly in place. Pull the assembly away from the truck, being careful not to damage the wires.

    • 3

Turn the bulb holder of the old bulb(s) counterclockwise, and pull it straight out of the center stop light assembly.

    • 4

Pull the old bulb from the socket and replace it with a new bulb.

    • 5

Insert the holder back in the socket and turn it clockwise to lock it in place.

    • 6

Return the upper stop light assembly to its place and replace the two screws. Do not over-tighten the screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the bulb sockets to protect them from water and salt.
