How to Replace the Intake/Exhaust Manifold in a Toyota Corolla

Toyota is better known than any other auto maker as a builder of study, reliable cars. The Corolla secured that reputation for Toyota. The model is known for its practicality and the number of people who bought a Corolla is staggering. The process for removing and installing the exhaust manifold in the second through fourth generations (1970 to 1982) for the 2T-C and 3T-C engines is the same except for the torque specifications.

Instructions

1. Remove the Exhaust Manifold

     Pull the negative battery cable from the terminal. Raise the vehicle on jack stands and make sure it is securely supported.

     Located the gravel shield on the underside of the engine and remove it. Remove the support bracket for the downpipe.

   • 3

     Loosen the bolts from the exhaust flange and then remove them. Pull the downpipe from the manifold.

   • 4

     Remove the manifold bolts in two or three passes. Start at the center of either side and work out, using a criss-cross pattern. Lift the manifold out.

   Install the Exhaust Manifold

     Clean any gasket material and debris from the mating surface. Use compressed air and solvent. Inspect the surface for any damage.

     Install a new gasket. Set the exhaust manifold in place.

     Tighten the bolts using the correct torque (see Tips). Tighten the bolts in sequence, starting at the center and working out in a criss-cross pattern, making three passes.

     Replace the downpipe. Set the exhaust flange in position and tighten the bolts. Replace the gravel shield.

   • 5

     Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks. Turn off the engine and lower the vehicle from the jack stands.

Tips & Warnings

• Torque specifications: 1971 through 1977 2T-C, 7 to foot pounds; 1978 and 1979 2T-C, 22 to 32 foot pounds; 1980 through 1982, 3T-C, 22 to 32 foot pounds.
