How to Adjust a Toyota Belt

How to Adjust a Toyota Belt

Adjusting the tension on a drive belt is done nearly the same way for every Toyota model. A tension pulley is what tightens and loosens the belt. On the face of the tension pulley is a 1/2-inch nut that controls the tension of the pulley. If the belt is too loose or too tight, then the engine will not function correctly, and that can cost you money.

Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • 1/2-inch box wrench
    • 1

Locate the tension pulley on the Toyota's engine. The tension pulley is commonly on the top of the engine next to the alternator. The tension pulley will be the smallest pulley that the belt connects to as well.

    • 2

Place the wrench on the nut on the face of the tension pulley. Turn the nut to the right to tighten the belt. Turn the nut to the left to loosen the belt. The belt needs to be tight, but not stretched.

    • 3

Remove the wrench from the nut on the tension pulley. Start the engine and allow the engine to run for five minutes. Listen for any squeaking. If you hear a squeak, adjust the belt until the squeak is gone.
