How to Change the Spare Tire on a Toyota Highlander

If you have a tire blow out or a nail in your tire, at some point you will have to pull over and replace the tire with the spare. It is important to know how to install the spare tire on your car just in case you don't have someone with you who does know how or if you are in a remote area where assistance cannot be found. Installing the spare tire is straightforward, and all the tools that you need for the job are located in the Highlander and are easily accessible.

  • Lug wrench
  • Jack
  • Spare tire

      Open the hatch of the Highlander.

      Remove the plastic trim piece on the right side of the interior hatch. There will be a tab to pull back that will allow you to remove the trim piece.

      Pull out the jack and lug wrench from the storage panel containing the tools.

      Pull the carpet back in the hatch to access the nut to remove the spare tire then loosen the nut to bring the tire down to the ground using the wrench found in the storage panel inside the hatch.

      Pull the spare tire from under the car.

      Loosen the lug nuts with the lug nut wrench.

      Jack up the Highlander with the jack provided in the hatch of the Highlander.

      Remove the tire from the car and place the spare onto the studs.

      Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench found in the hatch.

      Lower the Highlander to the ground and tighten the lug nuts securely.

      Place the old tire and all the tools in the hatch of the Highlander.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the lug nuts are very difficult to remove, you can try standing on the wrench and jumping on it. You can also attempt to kick it in a counterclockwise direction. Be advised that these techniques are only recommended in the absence of professional mechanic's tools such as an impact gun and could cause personal harm, so employ these methods at your own discretion.

  • Don't place any limbs beneath the vehicle, while working on it, because you won't have a jack stand to place beneath it.
