Toyota engine codes need to be manually cleared.

On Toyota automobiles, engine codes indicate various car problems, ranging from tiny problems to major failures; next, diagnostic scanners determine the precise error. After the problem has been resolved, the engine code may need to be manually cleared out. Doing so requires a bit of simple vehicle maintenance.

Locate the car's battery. Its exact location will vary depending on the make and model of your Toyota, but its usually in one of the four corners of the engine.

Turn the wrench so that it secures the negative battery clamp to the Toyota battery.

    • 5

    • 6

      Remove the negative battery clamp.

    • 7

      Wait 60 seconds.

    • 8

Return the negative battery clamp to the battery, tightening it with the wrench.

    • 9

Start the vehicle. The "check engine" light and engine code will now be off.

Tips & Warnings

  • For all Toyotas released prior to 1996, use an OBD-1 scanner; for newer cars, use the OBD-2 device.
