How to Install XM Radio in a Toyota Corolla

XM radio is transmitted via satellite to your Toyota Corolla. XM radio differs from traditional radio service in two ways. First, with XM radio, you can listen to the same radio station almost regardless of where you are driving. The service area normally covers all of the United States (or whatever country you happen to be in). Second, you pay for XM service. To install XM service in your Corolla, you'll need a special receiver as well as a subscription to the XM radio service.

     Mount the XM receiver in your Toyota Corolla. The receiver is the device that you plug the antenna into. It receives the information that is gathered from the antenna and displays important information on the display, such as the radio station name and the time. Mount the receiver in a place on your windshield or on your dash where it will not obstruct your view of the road.

     To mount the receiver, push the suction cup on the back of the receiver to the windshield glass. If you are not mounting it on the windshield, then you will need to apply the double-sided adhesive patch (included in your XM kit) to the back of the receiver and press the receiver to a flat, clean surface on your Corolla's dash. The exact mounting location is mostly a matter of preference.

     Mount the antenna by finding a suitable place on the roof (the top) of your Corolla to place the magnetic antenna. The antenna for most XM radio packages looks like a small "half egg." The top of the antenna is round and the bottom of the antenna is flat and contains a powerful magnet that will adhere to any place on your car that is metallic, like the roof of your Corolla. You can also mount the antenna on the trunk. In either case, touch the bottom of the antenna to the metallic surface you choose and the magnet will "stick" to the metal.

     Route the antenna wiring inside the Corolla. Route the wiring from the roof behind the rubber door trim so that you do not pinch the wiring when the door is closed.

     Plug the power connector from the antenna wiring into the XM radio receiver. Then press "Power" on your XM receiver and follow the instructions on the display screen to activate your XM radio.
